FBI Reports Online Fraud Aimed at Tsunami Relief

The FBI is reporting that fraudsters have established Web sites that claim to collect money to assist with the relief efforts established in the wake of last month’s tsunami tragedy — a particularly vile variant of the phishing scams that have become so common on the Internet.

Complaints also have been submitted to the Internet Crime Complaint Center about e-mails that claim to help families and friends locate a missing person in the area, the FBI says in a statement. Some of the fraudulent Web sites also spread viruses to people who visit them.
