Cybercrime remains a hard nut to crack
THE internet may not be the haven it seems for hi-tech crime, an Australian criminologist believes.
Australian Institute of Criminology director Dr Russell Smith says although significant steps have been taken, computer crime remains difficult to investigate and there are many unresolved legal and practical problems.
In a paper issued last week by the institute, Smith outlines seven barriers to the successful investigation of cross-border hi-tech crime.
The first is identifying suspects who can readily hide behind the anonymity of cyberspace.
Then when suspects are identified, there can be extradition problems.
